CSR has conducted a wide range of projects. We have worked on behalf of academic researchers, government agencies, private foundations, businesses, and non-profit organizations.

How much does it cost to do a survey?
CSR's rates are competitive with other academic and commercial survey organizations. Project costs can vary widely depending on factors such as the scope of services you require, the survey methodology used, the number of respondents, the nature of the sample, etc. Costs can range anywhere from $5,000 to $150,000. So while typical projects have been in the $20,000 to $50,000 range, we have also done smaller and larger projects. We invite you to contact one of our senior staff to discuss the scope of your project and factors that govern cost.

What's the best way to collect data for my project?
CSR can advise you on the most productive and cost-effective method for collecting your data: telephone, mail, electronically, or in-person. CSR ensures scientific validity of your study by helping specify procedures for selecting respondents within households, securing cooperation, and following up incomplete interviews or questionnaires.

Who writes the questions for my survey?
CSR can write the question for you or can assist you in writing your own. We will help you determine the best question formats to measure people's opinions, experiences, attitudes, and behaviors. We can advise you on the proper sequencing of items, a critical design feature for maintaining objectivity and ensuring that respondents understand your questions.

Search Completed Projects

On behalf of local non-profit citizens organization Foothills Forum CSR conducted a mail survey of residents of Rappahanock County VA. Survey packets were mailed to every household in the county and 1 362 were completed. The survey focused on needed services and on development issues and received extensive coverage in the local press.
CSR consulted with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation to plan and budget for a statewide survey about outdoors recreation. The survey would be part of the 5-year update of the Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP). CSR and DCR took into account prior experience with the 2011 SCORP. CSR produced a budget and memorandum in consultation to DCR.
CSR worked with a group of MS students in UVAs Data Science program who planned to survey UVa students about recent sexual assaults. They planned to create maps showing the time and location of assaults to identify 'hot spots' for this type of crime. CSR advised on the draft survey instrument. Due to security and privacy concerns no survey was conducted. Instead students obtained de-identified crime reports from the Charlottesville Police and analyzed seasonal time and location trends and created heat maps of the crime occurrences at different times of year.
The Fairfax County Department of Family Services is a client satisfaction survey. The survey is a self-administered paper survey that is mailed to clients' home addresses. The survey was mailed to a random sample of 3500 clients. The sample was proportionally stratified by service type. The survey also included a telephone follow-up to approximately 25% of the non-respondents. The questionnaire was translated into five languages beyond English (Vietnamese Farsi Spanish Korean and Arabic.)
Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) wanted to gather information on Customer Satisfaction for five different centers/services. These included Human Services Transportation (HST) Senior Centers (SC) Community Centers Teen Centers and Technology Centers. CSR reviewed and edited questionnaires ran mail and web surveys for HST and SC entered data gathered by NSC for the other centers and provided data tables for 799 total respondents and a methods report.
CSR provided technical and user support to all school divisions in Virginia as they sought to include all CTE completer students from the prior school year. CSR also provided websites for data collection and reporting (contracted through UVa Custom Applications and Consulting Services) communication data analysis and reporting.
Three-phase mixed-methods project measuring health information sharing patterns on and off of Facebook by respondents with Type II diabetes. Phases I and II consisted of qualitative interviews and focus groups. Phase III was a large-scale survey of 700 respondents with Type II diabetes.
This study is a replication of a 2008 study of similar design conducted by Dr. Pierce and CSR in response to a mandate passed by the Commonwealth of Virginia requiring girls to be vaccinated against HPV or Human papillomavirus prior to entry into the sixth grade starting in 2009. Using a prospective cohort design this is a study of parents of girls in the age range of 11-12 who have been outpatients at the UVa Health System. The study asked parents about their child’s health care provider childhood vaccinations their impressions regarding HPV vaccine and their decision whether or not to vaccinate their daughter. One goal of the study is to assess whether rates of vaccine uptake have improved since the original cohort was studied.
The City of Charlottesville Gas Safety Survey was conducted by the Center for Survey Research (CSR) at the University of Virginia on behalf of the Gas Distribution operations of the Public Utilities Division of the City of Charlottesville Virginia. CSR used a Computer-Aided Telephone Interviewing (CATI) system to conduct interviews with both residential and business natural gas customers and non-customers. In addition CSR interviewed representatives from companies that had performed excavation services within the natural gas service area of the City. This survey builds on prior surveys done in 2006 by another vendor and in 2010 by CSR. The intent of the survey was to support and test the impact of efforts to educate the public on natural gas safety issues. Additional questions about Energy Conservation were asked on behalf of the Charlottesville Energy Conservation Program.
Telephone survey of Virginia residents inquiring about their oral health. The purpose of the survey was to assess respondents’ access to oral health care and to identify the barriers that may exist between respondents and necessary oral health care.
In order to estimate the numnber of horses living in Virginia by age breed and locality CSR acquired electronic and paper records of Coggins tests in Virginia. These records provided a sampling frame for a survey of 5 600 horse owners. There were 2 804 respondents. A subsequent survey of veterinarians informed estimates of Coggins test rates by seven regions of Virginia. The data were weighted up to produce the estimated numbers of horses.
The goal of the project was to test different methods of recruiting a general population to an online panel of US citizens to consult on public policy issues. Respondents were asked to sign up for the Citizen Cabinet by mail or by going to the specified website and entering their code. In this process they were asked to complete a short intake questionnaire on paper or online.
This survey is a population-based surveillance system that collects state-specific data on maternal behaviors and experiences that occur before during and after pregnancy. The data are used for policy and program. The core questions are common to all states and the state specific questions are standard topic modules that VDH has selected for use in the survey. CSR was contracted to provide telephone reminders for non-respondents after several mailings through VDH and conduct telephone interviews with willing respondents.
Web and mail survey designed to assess employees’ satisfaction with their work environment and give employees an opportunity to contribute their ideas and opinions to help make the City of Charlottesville a better place to work. CSR had previously conducted a similar survey for the City in 2006 2010 and 2012.
The 2014 Loudoun County Survey of Residents was conducted by telephone with a scientifically selected sample of 1 017 county residents. Listed random-digit dial landline and cell numbers were included in the triple-frame sample design. Rural ZIP codes were oversampled. The questionnaire covered opinions about county services employment cell and broadband connectivity Metrorail destinations and priorities for station features and more.
CSR assisted the Center for Economic and Policy Studies (also a unit of the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service) to conduct three focus groups regarding the status of agriculture in Botetourt County and agricultural development needs and opportunities. Three focus groups were held in February 2015. CSR delivered a technical report to CEPS and CEPS delivered a final written report to the county.
Needs assessment for Roanoke Higher Education Center. Included interviews with representatives of RHEC member institutions and board members and a web survey of students faculty and alumni. Final presentation was in Roanoke.
The purpose of the study iwas to evaluate educational materials provided to people who go to a blood center to donate blood. The funding for this project came from America’s Blood Centers a network of community blood donation centers. CSR assisted by conducting a focus group and on-on-one interviews with Charlottesville residents who had not given blood in the past.
This is a survey of fourth year students in the UVa College of Arts and Sciences who graduated in May 2013. A second phase of the study also surveyed those who graduated in August 2013. These students are asked to share their “first destination” after college. The data that is collected gives University Career Services information about the number of students who have full-time employment when they graduate the number who have been accepted into graduate school and those whose plans are still in the planning phase. This information is then available to employers future students and departments who are preparing students for life after college graduation.
The survey was conducted on behalf of a public policy professor at the Batten School of Public Policy and Leadership. The researcher was interested in the view of professionals in the public policy field on how well Congress performs a variety of problem-solving tasks. CSR collaborated with Professor Patashnik and a graduate student assistant to program and distribute the survey using Qualtrics software licensed to CSR.
Consulted wth the UVa Cancer Center Minority RecruitmentTask Force on a draft questionnaire regarding awareness of clinical trials in the Charlottesville area. The instrument was intended for use at community outreach events.
The project's goal was to assess healthcare practitioner's perceptions of intimate partner violence in healthcare. UVA surgery resident Christine Gade was able to get responses from 239 Rwandan healthcare professionals on a self-administered paper questionnaire. The survey looked at multiple factors (including questions on what constitutes IPV, their perceptions of IPV in their patient populations, why they don't ask about IPV, and beliefs about future changes). CSR staff consulted on the questionnaire draft and assisted with analysis of the results.

CSR assisted researchers at the University of New Hampshire in conducting a survey of attitudes of likely voters regarding a special Senate election in Massachusetts that was to take place on June 25th 2013. The election pitted Republican Gabriel Gomez and Democrat Ed Markey. The survey tested how the candidates’ stands on several issues affected voter support for specific candidates. The survey also asked about the currently breaking news story regarding NSA domestic surveillance.
The purpose of this survey was to better understand why individuals accept or turn down offers of tenured/tenure-track faculty employment at the UVa. Specifically all respondents were asked to rate their experience with the interview process the quality of the offer they received from UVa and the importance of various attributes of the position to their final decision. Individuals who declined the offer of employment at UVa were asked about the offer they did accept and whether there was anything the University could have done to change their decision.
This is a mail and web survey of owners of equines quartered in Loudoun County (VA). A mail packet was sent to owners of 2 672 properties in the county meeting requirements for quartering horses. Email invitations were sent to 502 members of three equine groups in cooperation with the administrators of those organizations. Three other equine groups emailed their 645 collective members independently. Additional respondents were referred to a public-facing web survey by flyer survey referral card distribution media releases and word of mouth among the equine community. There were 1 543 usable responses to the equine owners survey. Results were used to estimate the number of equines and the economic impact of the equine industry in Loudoun County.
This web-based survey was designed to capture and provide feedback on alumni’s experience with the Weldon Cooper Center’s Senior Executive Institute (SEI) and Leading Educating and Developing (LEAD) programs. The survey also was designed to elicit feedback about potential future engagement of alumni in support of SEI/LEAD programs.
A web-based survey of current mathematics majors and recent graduates of the program. The purpose of the survey was to assess student perception of the major and to identify areas of perceived strength and weakness. All respondents rated their general experience as mathematics majors their perceptions of the course offerings and the quality of the Mathematics Department faculty. Graduates were also asked to evaluate the preparation they received for graduate school or employment. A total of 161 past and current students completed the survey (another 51 partially completed the survey) yielding an adjusted response rate of 39.5% (Current students 47.1% and alums 33%).
Web-based survey of members and former members of the International Neuropsychological Society that was conducted for Jennie Ponsford President at the time of the survey. As part of the strategic planning initiative of the organization the survey committee worked with CSR to develop a survey to invite members former members and conference attendees to give feedback on their experience and contact with the International Neuropsychological Society. The questions ask about membership conference participation promotion and publicity and publications. Dr. Ponsford presented the results of the survey at the INS North American Conference in February 2014.
In consultation with the UVa Department of Parking and Transportation CSR conducted an online and paper-based survey of faculty and staff opinions about transportation modes and issues related to their employment at UVa. The survey was aimed at determining modes of transportation used to commute to work perceived barriers to using alternative modes for those who commute alone in automobiles general opinions about transportation modes and issues and demographic information to aid in the analysis and interpretation of the data.
This was a mail-out survey asking residents if they had been diagnosed with asthma. A sample of respondents to the survey was to be asked to participate in a home visit that included a spirometry (lung capacity) breath test. The goal was to determine if there was a correlation between living in proximity to large-scale hog farming and asthma prevalence. The study was terminated before completion.
On behalf of Prof. A. J. Bostian UVa Department of Economics CSR recruited residents of the Charlottesville/Albemarle region to participate in lab experiments about savings behavior. The participants were drawn from a pool of respondents to the Fall 2012 Jefferson Area Community Survey (JACS2) who had expressed willingness to be contacted about future research studies at UVa. They were contacted by email and by phone and those who wished to participate were scheduled for specfic appointments at UVa's Garrett Hall where the experimental lab is located.
This web-based survey was administered to all University of Virginia graduates in the Class of 2014 from the School of Arts & Sciences the School of Architecture the School of Engineering and Applied Science or the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. The purpose of the survey was to get a sense of UVa graduates’ plans after graduation and what academic experiences and resources they had during their time at UVa.
The 2013 Loudoun County Equine Event Survey was conducted between March and November of 2013 by CSR in cooperation with the Loudoun County Equine Alliance (LCEA). The data at one event were collected by volunteers trained by CSR and in the other eleven instances by trained paid CSR staff. Interviewers asked event attendees to fill out surveys with their estimated expenditures and related data for that event. Interviewing was randomized among event participants spectators vendors and attendees and was conducted on-site during the event. There were 609 completed surveys.
CSR worked with a research team headed by Prof. Richard Bonnie (UVa School of Law) to prepare a research proposal to ARDRAF (Alzheimers and Related Diseases Research Advancement Fund). The proposed research would have explored issues in encouraging elders to prepare advance directives that would designate who would be empowered to act if they were to suffer dementia in future years. The proposal was not funded but the UVa School of Law underwrote some of the costs of CSR's work on the proposal.
The Kentucky Parent Survey was designed to provide data to help develop and influence health policy improved access to healthcare reduced health risks and health equity for Kentucky’s children. There were 1 006 interviews completd by telephone. CSR provided data tables to the Foundation for a Health Kentucky.
This was a triple-frame telephone survey of 1.096 residents of Loudoun County (VA). The sample was disproportionate to allow comparisons of residenrts in rural and non-rural areas designated by ZIP codes. The survey covered satisfaction with county services and opinions about transportation priorities use of public transportation the impact of federal spending and desire for additional county facilities. The data were weighted for reporting.
A survey of opinions regarding the performance of University of Virginia Physicians Group staff in eight operational areas by the 697 employees of these various areas. For each operational area four to six dimensions of service were rated on a five-point Likert-type scale. Each area was also rated for overall satisfaction with its services.
Second wave of CSR’s recurrent regional omnibus telephone survey. Topics included Water conservation smoking sharing of electronic medical records and consent to participate in medical research. Additional questions concerned the 2012 presidential rate the 2012 UVa governance crisis and consumer confidence. Respondents were also asked if they wished to enroll in a new CSR subject pool of persons willing to be contacted for future research studies by UVa or other academic institutions.
The 2012 Chesterfield County Citizen Satisfaction Survey was conducted by telephone by the Center for Survey Research (CSR) at the University of Virginia in the fall of 2012. There were 528 respondents drawn in roughly equal numbers from the five magisterial districts of the county. The questionniare asked about saitisfaction with various county services and the county's responsiveness to resident feedback.
The University of Virginia School of Medicine (SOM) commissioned CSR to collect and analyze its 2012 Staff Engagement Survey. The SOM Staff Engagement survey is based on the Q12 questions developed by the Gallup Research Group and a 7-item Health System Engagement Index. In addition to these questions employees were asked to rate some additional items and provide certain demographic data. Analysis and reporting is limited to a brief text overview and a series of tables by question and by employee demographics.
At the request of Robin Petroze fellow in Surgery at UVa and a co-PI on the Surgeons Overseas Survey Assessment of Surgical Need (SOSAS) for Rwanda CSR assisted in a re-analysis of the survey data focused on the needs of children.
CSR assisted Dr. Wendy Cohn of UVa Public Health Sciences by analysing survey data collected in a Harrisonburg community health survey and classifying each respondent into one of 9 TEACH categories indicating their preferences iin seeking health information.

In partnership with George Mason University CSR conducted a statewide poll of Virginia voters in October 2012 regarding how they planned to vote in the following month’s elections as well as their attitudes toward a number of issues related to the election. Reporting of the results was conducted through press releases rather than the writing of a complete formal report. UVa students in SOC 3120 under the direction of Professor Rexrode did the data collection as part of their class requirements.
BioX 2012 was a research study funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and sponsored by San Jose State University. The project was designed to acquire feedback about the Bioengineering Educational Materials Bank website (BioEMB website) from registered site users. The survey was designed to aid the website creators in improving curriculum materials and support for undergraduate education in bioengineering and to inform the final report on the NSF grant that funded the BioEMB website.
At the request of the Pittsylvania County Agriculture Development Office the Center for Survey Research conducted three focus groups to describe and report on the status of agribusiness in Pittsylvania County and Danville City and to solicit input about agribusiness development needs and opportunities. In addition CSR conducted semi-structured interviews with the Agricultural Board members to get their reaction to the focus group results.
The Virginia Vascular Surgeons project was a web-based survey (Qualtrics) sponsored by Dr. Margaret Clarke Tracci University of Virginia Department of Surgery. The purpose of the project was to investigate Virginia vascular surgeons’ compliance with and opinion about electronic programs newly mandated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services a unit of the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
CSR assisted the UVa Partnership for Leaders in Education with a web-based survey offered to 1 320 teachers at 35 schools in seven school divisions located in Arizona North Carolina and Utah. The survey asked about leadership work activities and school climate issues. There were 580 usable responses for a response rate of 47.9%.
