What kinds of projects are done at CSR?

CSR has conducted a wide range of projects. We have worked on behalf of academic researchers, government agencies, private foundations, businesses, and non-profit organizations.

CSR has recently purchased Quatlrics which allows for the creation and implementation of sophisticated, user friendly online surveys. Qualtrics can be used to schedule both reminder and thank-you emails based on completion of the survey.

How much does it cost to do a survey?
CSR's rates are competitive with other academic and commercial survey organizations. Project costs can vary widely depending on factors such as the scope of services you require, the survey methodology used, the number of respondents, the nature of the sample, etc. Costs can range anywhere from $5,000 to $150,000. So while typical projects have been in the $20,000 to $50,000 range, we have also done smaller and larger projects. We invite you to contact one of our senior staff to discuss the scope of your project and factors that govern cost.

What's the best way to collect data for my project?
CSR can advise you on the most productive and cost-effective method for collecting your data: telephone, mail, electronically, or in-person. CSR ensures scientific validity of your study by helping specify procedures for selecting respondents within households, securing cooperation, and following up incomplete interviews or questionnaires.

Who writes the questions for my survey?
CSR can write the question for you or can assist you in writing your own. We will help you determine the best question formats to measure people's opinions, experiences, attitudes, and behaviors. We can advise you on the proper sequencing of items, a critical design feature for maintaining objectivity and ensuring that respondents understand your questions.

Search Completed Projects

This was a survey of all fourth year undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences. Students were asked to participate in the survey in the early spring just prior to graduation. The survey ask students what they anticipated their "first destination" to be upon graduation. Students were then surveyed in the fall immediately following graduation to see how closely their information matched what they actually did after graduation.
CSR staff consulted to SERL-VCU to support the 2008 Washington County Triennial School Census. Activities included advice on Access database structure SPSS analysis to produce census counts and written technical notes on the process.
This was a mail survey of a random sample of 1 329 physicians in the U.S. and Canada stratified by country and physician type (general practitioner or specialist). The survey asked physicians about opinions about the direction of the profession in general aids and hindrances to practicing medicine time spent on various activities as a percentage of the typical day impacts of insurance companies and governments patient relationships perceived support from various types of organizations opinions about physician advocacy opinions about pharmaceutical companies and demographics. The protocol included an advance letter a survey packet with a $2 U.S. Jefferson bill for U.S. physicians or a $2 Canadian coin (“toonie”) as a token of appreciation a generic thank-you/reminder post card a second survey packet sent by two-day Priority Mail to nonrespondents a second thank-you/reminder post card to nonrespondents and telephone reminder calls to nonrespondents. The unweighted AAPOR RR3 response rate was 25.9% (26.7% U.S. 23.8% Canadian).

The purpose of the study was to explore the level of agreement between physicians nurses and breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy regarding the goal of the chemotherapy. The study was conducted through self-administered surveys with physicians nurses and patients.
In July 2006 Virginia approved the Restructured Higher Education Financial and Administrative Operations Act which gives state universities freedom to control areas such as personnel management. The Human Resources Staff of both universities collaborated closely with CSR to construct a common questionnaire to respond to this action. The purpose of this project was to conduct a comprehensive survey of the supervisors and staff of Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia to assess their attitudes toward human resources policies. The results of the survey were used to guide the restructuring process of the institutions’ human resources practices. The principle mode was internet with telephone reminders and some paper completions.

The Class of 1990 Study is the first systematic attempt to find out how satisfied graduates of the University of Virginia School of Law are with their professional careers and with other key aspects of their lives. Experiences after Law School will help to define what makes a student’s time in school both beneficial and productive.
Follow up on Albemarle County project. Survey participants were invited to join in a focus group asking for feedback on the County's efforts to communicate with citizens and solicit their input.

Telephone survey of residents of Small District #5 Reston VA. Questions addressed RCC name recognition mission statement use of facilities and governance.
CSR provided data analysis and consultation on data reporting to the Virginia Institute of Autism (VIA) for a web-based survey of families with children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders to determine future treatment and support needs. The survey was independently designed and executed by VIA. There were 210 respondents to the survey. VIA prepared a written report of the results using CSR data analyses and consultation from CSR.
This survey was designed to determine residents’ opinions about quality of life in Spotsylvania County to determine residents’ level of satisfaction with a number of services the County provides and to measure citizen opinion about the way in which the County is managing growth and development. Of particular interest were the importance ratings of various planning goals and safety and characteristics of the County.
In support of the work of the Commission on Mental Health Law Reform CSR assisted Dr. McGarvey with advanced statistical analyses including cluster analysis of data describing details of commitment proceedings statewide and characteristics of the persons who were subjects of these proceedings.
This survey was designed to determine residents’ opinions about quality of life in Prince William County to determine residents’ level of satisfaction with a number of services the County provides and to measure citizen opinion about the way in which the County is managing growth and development. Of particular interest was whether or not citizen opinion has changed on some key issues since the 1993 survey also conducted by CSR. New features of this year’s survey are the inclusion of cell-phone respondents and the addition of new questions related to the County’s immigration policy adopted by the County Board of Supervisors in July 2007 and implemented by the Police Department in Spring 2008.
This project conducted on behalf of INTERQUEST a consulting firm specialized in the digital printing market was about a study on the usage of multifunction systems—integrated copier/printer/scanner devices—in the office environment. Interquest studies trends in the industry and makes recommendations to Manufacturers and users through their industry publications.
Survey of high school seniors and their decisions about going to college. Initial survey in the fall interviewed parents as well as students before applications were due. Respondents had the choice of responding on the web or by mail. Parents had to actively consent before students could be contacted. A Valentine's Day postcard was sent to students to keep an active line of communication open. Advance letters and emails were sent directly to students for the Spring questionnaires. Students were guided to the web version as easier and quicker. Most chose to use this method. Initial mailing was to 1100 parents and kids and with follow up responding students in Spring 08. Incentives of $20 for the Fall surveys $25 for the Spring survey awith an advance of $2 with the questionnaire itself. 623 students finished both questionnaires.
This project was initiated by Jennifer Young M.D. in response to a mandate passed by the State of Virginia requiring girls to be vaccinated against HPV prior to entry into the sixth grade starting in October 2008. This will in effect exclude women ages 16-26 from required vaccination. The purpose of the survey was to learn how women ages 16-26 are receiving the HPV vaccine and what barriers to vaccination exist for women in this age group.
CSR assisted the UVa Health Service Foundation in analyzing the results of its 2007 Employee Engagement Survey comparing these results to those from 2006. HSF had designed the survey and collected data via the Internet and paper questionnaires. CSR provided a narrative report presenting 2006 results 2007 results and a comparative statistical analysis of the two years.
A re-sample survey of those reporting symptoms that could indicate asthma from the records of participants in Southern Health insurance plan. Sample for this arm of the project were non-responders to previous mail-out done by Southern Health. Out of the 1000 adults and 300 children total of 563 completed the survey which makes the resposne rate to be 43% for this survey.
The Fairfax County Department of Family Services survey is a client satisfaction survey. The survey was a self-administered paper survey that was mailed to clients' home addresses. The survey was maled to a random sample of 3500 clients. All questionnaires were made available in English as well as five other languages. This was the second survey conducted for the Fairfax County Department of Family Services.
With support of a grant from the UVA Center for Politics and cooperation from AAPOR and YouGov/Polimetrix CSR conducted an experiment to determine if respondent experience could be improved by changing the design of political message testing polls. The nationwide internet survey fielded by YouGov asked about a generic congressional race and included negative and some positive statements about each party's performance in Congress. Treatments varied in the balance of statements the way they were introduced and the test question wording. Better design significantly improved respondent experience. Results presented at AAPOR disseminated to political consultants and published in MRA' Alert magazine.
This is a mail survey with telephone follow-up to 413 healthcare organizations about the care of adults with autism. The current increase in the diagnosis of children with autism spectrum disorders is anticipated to create an increase in the number of adults with autism spectrum disorders. Are healthcare agencies anticipating this increase? What are they doing to prepare for it? What do they see as barriers to their own preparation efforts or to those that might be undertaken generally? Three lists were used for sampling Medicaid waiver service providers (n=327) sheltered employment (ESOs n=47) and DRS field offices (n=39). There were 141 responses for a response rate of 34.1%. Results were tabulated and summarized in a bulleted document. Tables and the bullet summary were delivered to the sponsor. No written report was done. A PowerPoint presentation was created later for use by John Toscano.
This was a comprehensive assessment of Virginia's business climate its major dimensions and components and how ratings of those components relate to overall ratings of the business climate and the state's role in creating it. Data were collected by mail (n=755) and web (n=106). The project used a disproportionate stratified sample of Virginia businesses listed in the VEC ES-202 report supplemented with contact and mailability data from Dun & Bradstreet as well as follow-up calls by CSR. The original sample of 4 399 records was pulled from 89 699 businesses in 200 strata defined by size (5) region (8) and type of business (5). In general larger firms less populated regions and smaller industry lines were oversampled. The sampled records were supplemented by D&B information then sampled again based on likelihood of contact for a final sample of 3 601 businesses. The work was shared between the Survey and Evaluation Research Laboratory at VCU and the Center for Survey Research at UVA. The overall response rate was 29% (AAPOR RR3).
Survey assessed how those who are involved in data collection protect the health and safety of clinicl trial participants. Survey reached a national sample of National Institutes of Health researchers conducting clinical trials as well as biostatisticians involved in analysis and reporting and IRB members responsible for reviewing the results.
The 2006 Northern Shenandoah Valley Regional Workforce Study Survey was conducted at the request of the Winchester/Frederick County Economic Development Commission. The survey’s purpose is to supplement information available from Census 2000 and other official sources with more detailed and current information regarding the region’s labor force so that the Commission will be better prepared for the future. The survey emphasizes the characteristics of those residents who might be interested in alternative or additional employment or who commute long distances to work outside the region

Phone survey replicates a 2003 study of interethnic relations conducted in Durham NC. This study was conducted in 3 Southern cities Durham NC Memphis TN and Little Rock AR. The study asks whites African-Americans and Hispanics about their interractions with and attitudes toward those of another race.
A survey of residents of Williamsburg VA and surrounding counties targeted on those residing in medically underserved areas. A combination of telephone and in-person methods of contact was used. The survey measures the extent to which people are experiencing problems in accessing phsyician services and whether certain types of people are more likely to experience problems with the goal of identifying major issues and challenges to improving physician access.
Repeat of 2005 survey
The Uva Investment Management Company commissioned CSR to conduct a survey of all full-time employees. The questionnaire was modeled on other organizational surveys previously conducted by CSR using the organization's mission statement and values. The survey was conducted on the web. The client was provided with tables reporting overall frequencies and means as well as a breakdown of means by directors and non-directors.
Employee satisfaction survey
Telephone survey of key staff members in a sample of Virginia long-term care facilities (assisted living and nursing homes) to explore how these institutions facilitate voting by their residents. The interview focused especially on how issues of cognitive impairment or dementia are evaluated in relation to voting and how residents are assisted (or not) by staff in registering to vote and casting their ballots either at the polls or as absentees.
CSR assisted the Department of Student Health with its third annual norming survey of alcohol use by UVA students by designing a stratified sampling plan for the survey. Margins of error were optimized in the design by examining response rates and descriptive statistics from the prior year’s survey.

Evaluation of employee level of satisfaction with internal services of the city government.
Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) is a voluntary government-business initiative established by Customs Border Patrol following the September 11 terrorist attacks. The main purpose of C-TPAT is to build cooperate relationships that strengthen and improve overall international supply chain and U.S. border security. The project was a survey of C-TPAT members to understand the benefits of being a C-TPAT partner and to track the costs and return on investment of being associated with C-TPAT membership. The project included an SME (Subject Matter Expert) workshop semi-structured interviews a pilot study and a web questionnaire.
CSR fielded a national RDD sample survey to determine the public's confidence in critical infrastruture in case of terrorist attacks. Results are to be compared with Virginia Maryland and Washington DC data collected by GMU's survey center.
The purpose of the study was to discover if and how this small number of students thought their Religious Studies training had prepared them well for teaching.
National survey on public attitudes about crimes such as fraud and embezzlement. Respondents were given short scenarios and were asked to rate the seriousness of the crime. In another section of the questionnaire respondents were asked about incidents of crime that they experienced and what they did about it such as report the crime to the police call the Better Business Bureau or other agencies.
Study of neighborhood needs.
Consultation services were provided to the agency to design a customer satisfaction survey and possibly an employee satisfaction survey.

The Arlington Partnership for Children Youth and Families through the Arlington County Department of Human Service contacted CSR to conduct an Early Childhood Survey pretest in Arlington County. A focus group and pretest were conducted to develop a questionnaire for client use. Pretest results revealed that conducting this survey using RDD telephone mode is not practical.
Post election survey with oversample of youth
The study was designed to obtain estimates of the average median and range of wait times customers spend in line at the information desk. The study was prompted by legislation passed by the 2005 Session of the Virginia General Assembly that requires the Department of Motor Vehicles to determine the effects of reducing or increasing average customer wait times. As part of the effort to determine the wait time DMV commissioned the Center for Survey Research (CSR) University of Virginia to carry out the field study.
Survey of faculty knowledge and experience with the Honor System.
This annual survey aims to assess education experience of 1st year and 2nd year students at the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia. It covers a broad range of topics including classroom experience curriculum faculty social activities career service facilities and admission process of 1st year students. The Darden Students Association administers two online questionnaires (one for 1st year and one for 2nd year) at the end of every academic year and the raw data is then forwarded to CSR for analysis. The role of CSR is to generate statistical reports and compile and process open-end responses for each questionnaire usually in a 2-week period.
